Do the Job Right!! Do the Job Safe and get home each night.
My name is Stephen Whitehead. I am 43 years old and have three children. I live on a small block at Waitahuna with my partner, Lee-Ann.
I work as the Spreading Division Manager for Road Transport Logistics, where we run 15 spreader trucks throughout Otago and part of Southland.
I have been involved in the Groundspreading and Transport industry for 17 years, where I worked for Tuapeka Transport Ltd before managing Advanced Spreading Ltd.
Prior to this I have worked on farms, mainly operating tractors and trucks. I have also worked as a blade shearer, freezing worker and I am a qualified butcher.
These positions have given me a good broad grounding in the rural sector, allowing me to gains skills and knowledge in a number of areas.
This has led to me becoming very passionate about Groundspreading and all facets of the industry.
My key interests are being involved with my children, either with their education or sports eg. rugby, squash, golf, dirt bike riding,
I am a very keen Enduro dirt bike rider and try to compete in as many South Island Enduros or Hard Enduro events as I can.
I also still play a small amount of squash to try and keep semi fit over the winter.
Even though I grew up in Canterbury I am a staunch Otago rugby fan.
My involvement in this sport has grown over the last few years with being the manager of the West Otago U18 team which my oldest son plays for.
I am also looking forward to being the coach of the Bottom of the South Area School team that will be competing in July at the nationals in Whangarei.
I am looking forward to my future involvement in the Groundspread industry.
I have been involved in the ground spreading industry since 2001 and am a strong believer of doing the job safely and to the best of our ability, also getting home safe every night. I have been the branch delegate since 2012/2013 and held the position of branch chairman from 2014 until 2019. I live in Riverton and I am happily married to Sarah. I have three daughters and one son. I enjoy coaching the Riverton Senior Rugby Team and cruising around in my Buick Classic Car, I am currently hot rodding a 1948 Plymouth. I am a member of the Riviera Touring and Street Machines Car Clubs and I enjoy going to car shows and as my son would say 'drag racing'.
I'm relatively new to the transport industry, having only worked at Northern Southland Transport, Lumsden, since November 2017.
But after 15 years in the hospitality industry - with eight years at Distinction Hotel & Villas in Te Anau as their house keeping manger - I was ready for a change.
Switching to this busy office administrator role was a massive change - and I'm loving it. Last year, part of my role was to help organise the Otago/Southland Conference. This was a great introduction to the world of ground spreading. I also attended the 2019 conference in Taupo which I enjoyed and which made me want to contribute to further the association. In mid 2019, I volunteered for the branch secretary position, taking over from Donna.
I believe our priority is making sure our drivers are safe and that our clients receive the most professional spreading service we can provide.
I live in Te Anau with my husband, Nigel (Verge), who also works at Northern Southland Transport - as my boss.
